The Advantage of Knowing About Microsoft

01/04/2012

We know for a fact that Microsoft is not as sexy as the other operating systems out there.

We know that Apple has a much smoother, more secure program. We know that their system is strong, all the way through, and that all the cool kids are using it. If you're an artist or if you just love a high tech aesthetic, you'll love Apple.

Or maybe you're a real tech-head and your OS is a Linux-based system. In which case, you have the most flexibility to design your OS the way you want it to be. Your build is efficient and flexible, and you can fine tune it to a ridiculous degree. Yes, Microsoft Windows has some flexibility, but it's nothing like Linux.

We know that.

So, how dare we insist on you learning something like this?

Well, truthfully, it's a matter of numbers. You can talk about the relative statistics of one OS versus another, but the fact is that Microsoft has about 90% of the market share right now. And most businesses, if they use any system at all, use Windows. Which means that, with all the calls being made for help, about nine out of every ten are going to ask about Windows.

That's where the money is now. And if you want to make money and get the life that you want, then learning the ins and outs of Windows is a surefire way to do it.

Building a Career with PC Pro Schools

Careers have certainly changed in the past few years. The idea used to be that you find a company, and then work within it for 30-40 years. You slowly progress, earning raises and making the most of the time that you have within the company.

It’s different now. Now a career is defined as working, period.

These days, careers are more about the skills that you bring and the people that you know. And you have to have something really valuable in today’s economy - either a rock solid connection, or a set of skills that companies are practically dying to get their hands on.

And while those connections are valuable, they are also hard to forge. You’re dealing with people, and people are strange and unstable things. You end up having to work hard to establish the relationship, and you have to prolong that effort while demonstrating your own trustworthiness in the relationship. Even assuming that you do all of this, there’s no guarantee that it’ll ever come to anything.

Skills, on the other hand, properly certified, will not fail to distinguish you in the workplace. And the one place where you can develop those skills the most easily is at PC Pro Schools.

What is Unix?

So, Windows has an overwhelming amount of the market share when it comes to operating systems. Apple’s iOS is represented way beyond the appropriate proportions, usually by hacker types and the Internet. There is not much of the market that is not touched by Microsoft, but what little there is tends to be taken by Apple.

There is, however, another operating system in use now, referred to as Unix.

Unix is a different operating system. It’s a multi-tasking, multi-user operating system that was first pioneered back in the 60s by a group of employees working for AT&T. It was originally recorded in assembly language, but by the 70s it had been recorded in C, meaning that it could be ported more easily to other types of hardware.

This OS is currently seeing more use for servers, mobile devices, and workstations at various corporations and programming development labs.

About Windows 8

12/06/2011

Windows, it seems, doesn’t stop with any one build in particular, but keeps on moving through as many of them as it can.

Case in point. If you go to Best Buy today, you’re likely to see at least several computers that are using the Windows 7 operating system. It hasn’t been that long since they created the darn thing, not really. And already we’re looking for the next big thing, the next build of Windows.

It’s rather curious, isn’t it? People love to rag on Microsoft because it isn’t Apple, and they love to rag on the operating systems the most of all. Sometimes they’re just genuinely bad, but that doesn’t explain why everyone gets so excited about the newest gadget that 8 represents. Windows 7 isn’t really a bad system; if anything, it’s done rather well. Why is there a need for a new one so soon?

Well, the biggest reasons that people are excited for this new build include a few different ones. One reason is that the newest Microsoft operating system is going to include support for various microprocessors that are currently being implemented in newer computers. Additionally, the start screen interface has changed as well. Supposedly it was changed with some input from touchscreen devices such as new smart phones. But it will also take the old forms of input from a mouse or from a keyboard.

In other words, it seems that they learned an awful lot from their foray into smart phones, and they want to keep on with what they’re learning. There are also new authentication methods for people, allowing them to ‘sketch’ in their passwords as opposed to having to remember a string of code.

They also plan to use a ribbon interface, similar to the toolbar you see in your Word Processor programs. Microsoft plans to implement this for the Windows Explorer program.

Windows 8 will also come with the Windows Store, a place where you can go to buy apps for Windows, to keep either on a smart phone or else to use on your computer.

A Lesson From Bill Gates

12/05/2011

If you want to live an uncommon life of wealth, it may be considered best to look to those people who have lived uncommonly. After all, if success were an easy thing, then everyone would do it, and that would carry its own connotations about how things work. And in particular, when looking for a goal, a fine way to figure out the best way to pursue it is to find out about those who have gotten there before you. Finding how they did it, and then mimicking their actions and their attitudes as exactly as you can.

Let us consider the case of Bill Gates, for instance. He is a man of considerable wealth, even today in the wake of his charities. He is a man of uncommon success, something that we could all agree with. Furthermore, he has achieved this success to such a degree that it’s unbelievable in this day and age.

What few people realize is that he didn’t start out on the road to his success in the usual way. Most people assume it’s just an education and then you go on to some place where people like you and pay more for your services. It wasn’t like that with Gates; even though he made it into Harvard, he dropped out of school and for a time he worked out of his parent’s garage.

He was a smart kid. And he knew a lot about computers; they were his passion, something that excited him more than anything else.

So what are we saying? That you don’t need our services? That you don’t need an education? Hardly. What we are saying is simply that to get somewhere uncommon, you need to do something uncommon. And we can be that uncommon thing that helps you get to where you want to go.

Why It's Important to Know How to Use Microsoft Software

11/23/2011

We know that all the cool kids are using Mac computers these days. We know that real programmers, and by extension real companies, use LINUX. We get that you want to learn computer skills, and to understand the deeper inner workings of the programs that you’re working with.

We also know that you want to earn some money.

Nothing wrong with any of that. But if any of it is true, then you’re going to need a bit of a reality check.

The truth is that Microsoft has a very ubiquitous software platform in Windows 7. It’s everywhere, and everyone is using it. Some folks are even saying it’s a decent OS to work with. Whether it is or not, though, with so many people using it there’s a lot of demand for people who know how to work with it.

That’s why we actually have these programs to begin with. We have them here, as they are, so that our students can earn help desk certifications and become IT professionals. It’s not glamorous, it’s not hipster, but it is useful, and we mold some of the most valued professionals to be found in the industry today.

So, you as a student have to weigh your priorities. At the end of the day, is it really better for you to devote your time to programming languages on your own time? Or is it better to earn a certification and get placed in a job? We would argue for the latter, given the immediate applicability of those skills for your livelihood.

The Importance of Computer Skills

11/17/2011

Computer skills are the equivalent of a blue collar skill 30 or 40 years ago. They’re valued, integral, part of how things are done now. And, because they’re valued in the corporate world, they tend to come with a higher pay grade than comparable work in the past.

Nobody in this day and age questions the worth of those skills. They’re spoken of with the same regard, the almost mystique of automotive repair or home maintenance.

And yet, curiously, there are few people moving to swell the ranks. Whether it be on account of intimidation on account of the difficulty of those skills or on account of prior professional training, there are very few people moving to fill those jobs, and they often end up getting outsourced.

But they don’t have to be. They can be a real opportunity for someone who has the right skills - the skills that we specialize in providing.
